Literacy Event – Tuesday 22nd November

By Blog No Comments

Parents are a child’s first and most enduring educators.

Our setting has supported parent partnerships in Reaching Early Achievement in literacy and creating links with services in the local community. I would like to thank all of the families for supporting this event and to the staff for their tireless contributions.

Therfield Village Pre-School has been focussing on Nursery Rhymes as their theme this term, with related activities. The children are making Nursery Rhyme books to take home.

On Tuesday 22nd November the Pre-School held its first Literacy Event. Families were invited to meet in Royston for a sponsored Environmental Print Scavenger Hunt, searching for local business names and road signs. Supporting the local community and promoting services the families visited the library where they were welcomed by the staff and issued their own library cards. Grandparents and siblings all joined in with sharing books creating a lovely atmosphere.

The families returned to Therfield Pre-School for a cake and book sale, followed by literacy-based activities including mark making in glitter on a lightbox, environmental print puzzles, a role play library, a campfire, and an interactive jolly jingles singing session.

The event was closed with a visit from The Tiger Who Came To Tea.

Studies have shown that children who have been read to daily tend to achieve more in the first year of primary school not only in language and literacy but across all other areas of learning and development.

Natasha Bailey, Deputy Leader, said of the event.
