Throughout our sessions we are able to extend the children’s learning in all areas through play. We have recently had opportunities to include counting, numerals, shapes, measuring and capacity in our discovery play, shop role-play and construction activities.
Our shop role-play initiated by the children and enhanced by the addition of tills, shopping baskets etc included mark-making as we wrote our own shopping lists, and simple calculating, adding up the cost of the shopping, handing the shopkeeper the correct number of pennies etc. We just have to make sure the children don’t realise quite how hard they are working on these important skills!!
